This leads to the loss of natural moisture, making your skin vulnerable. To avoid this, it is advised to use gentle, non-foaming facial cleansers, and to immediately apply moisturizer after washing your face or taking a shower. In addition to applying moisturizer, you can also opt for products that contain glycerin or petroleum jelly. If you wish to tackle your dry skin issues, keep in mind to stay well hydrated. Lack of hydration can leave your skin feeling parched. To increase your hydration levels, you can add watery fruits and vegetables to your diet.

Dry and flaky skin can be easily treated using ingredients which can be found in your kitchen.

Baking Soda :

Using baking soda is a well-known folk remedy known for relieving the itching sensation. Baking soda is also considered a skin-friendly alternative to jumping in the hot shower. For 30 minutes soak in a tub of hot water mixed with 1 cup of baking soda, and then air dry.

Oatmeal :

Packed with Vitamin E, Oatmeal will soothe your skin. It also contains vital nutrients which can help to give you healthy skin. It can be used to treat dry and chapped skin on your hands. Instead of using soap, you can rub your hands in wet oatmeal and then dry your hands with a towel.

Honey :

Filled with anti-oxidant and anti-microbial properties, honey is one of the best natural moisturizers. Honey helps to lock in the skin’s natural moisture, making it extra smooth. It also has essential vitamins and minerals which help to improve the skin’s overall health. Rub honey all over your body, and leave it on for about 10 minutes before taking a shower. Repeat this daily for a well-moisturized skin.

Coconut Oil :

With a generous amount of fatty acids, Coconut oil is an excellent remedy for treating skin that is dry. It helps to make up for the loss of natural moisture from your skin. Apply warm coconut oil liberally all over your body before going to sleep and wash it off in the morning. For soft and smooth skin, repeat this daily.

Olive Oil:

It is filled with anti-oxidants and fatty acids which are good for your skin and can maintain its health. It helps to soothe and condition your skin. Before applying your regular moisturizer, dab a thin layer of olive oil. Half an hour before showering, apply olive oil over your hands, legs and other areas. After taking a shower, apply a light moisturizer.

In some cases, these home remedies may not help in improving the condition of your skin. To find out if there are any other underlying factors affecting your skin, it is important to consult a dermatologist. There are possibilities you might have conditions which require individual treatments such as eczema or psoriasis. These conditions require treatments as well as possible prescribed medication.

Eczema:

It is an autoimmune condition, as believed by some researchers, it may be related to hay fever and asthma. The appearance of this condition is usually dry and flaky patches which can be found around the elbows, knees, ankles and wrists. Sometimes they can also be noticed on the face, especially around the eyes and on your eyelids. To help treat eczema it is necessary to use ointments prescribed by the doctor as it cannot be treated using regular moisturizers. In some cases the treatment of this condition may be harder and may require antibiotics, antihistamines etc. to help relieve the itching.

Psoriasis:

It is a chronic skin condition which is characterized by red and irritated skin which is covered with silvery flaky scales. To relieve the symptoms of psoriasis, ointments or creams which contain corticosteroids, salicylic acid, or retinoids can be used. In case of this skin condition, the underlying condition is permanent. It has been shown that daily exposure to sunlight or other sources of ultraviolet rays can help to reduce the appearance of these lesions.
